Taxol (generic name Ð paclitaxel) - is a relatively new anti-leukemic and anti-tumor agent, possessing a cytotoxic activity. It suppresses cell division by binding to so-called microtubules that form in a cell's nucleus to help move the chromosomes around during the division process. Taxol is most effective against ovarian carcinomas and advanced breast carcinomas, particularly after failure of standard chemotherapy. Studies indicate that it might be effective against leukemia, lung carcinoma, colon carcinoma, renal carcinoma, melanoma, and CNS carcinoma. Taxol is toxic, and patients receiving it often develop problems ranging from rashes, drop in blood pressure and anemia to major breathing problems, hives and/or fluid buildup around the heart and bone marrow suppression. Hair loss has been observed in almost all patients. Some patients experience severe hypersensitivity reactions to Taxol. It is manufactured by Bristol-Myers-Squibb Company for intravenous administration.
